Grants for Older Students

Last Updated:

Going back to school as a grown adult may seem like a pretty daunting task. For starters, fitting in school with a full time job can be tough, not to mention finding childcare for your kids if you have any, and last but not least, finding the money to pay for the schooling itself. Even though there are all of these obstacles to deal with, going back to school is still something that is very beneficial for a grown adult as it means better job opportunities, more money, and basically, it just opens a lot more doors. For that reason, if you can, you need to go back to school, and there are actually a lot of grants and other funding options available for adults to help them get the education that they want.

Grants Available at the National Level

To help fund your education, one avenue to pursue is applying for grants at the national level. For example, if you are going to attend a four-year university or some other traditional school, then you can pursue a Pell Grant to help pay for your school. This type of grant is provided to low-income students who are pursuing post-secondary education opportunities. How much money a student is awarded depends upon a couple of different factors, such as what they themselves can contribute and their enrollment status. The first step to take when applying for this grant is to go to the institution that you are planning to attend to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. You can get this form at the institution’s financial aid office, and while you are there, you can always ask them for help with other ways to pay for school.

Other Grant Opportunities

And speaking of other ways for adults to pay for school, there are actually other grant opportunities that a person can take advantage of. For instance, there are local agencies in certain parts of the country that provide grants to students, like advocacy groups for women who want to see single moms succeed or non-profit agencies that support adults continuing education. To find them in your region, the easiest thing to do is to go online and do some research. There are also businesses and corporations that offer grants to students as well, and again, to find them, you need to do some research, whether it is online or calling around to see what might be available.

Other Funding Opportunities

Grants are not the only funding options out there for paying for schools, as there are other ways to get some money to pay for things too. A few of them include seeking out scholarships, whether it be through non-profit agencies or business, having a company or organization sponsor your schooling, or taking out student loans through a bank to pay for it. Some banks even offer student loans at very low interest rates, and the government also provides student loans as well. The low interest loans afford you the opportunity to borrow money without racking up a lot of debt in the process.

When it comes down to it, if you are an older student and are looking for a way to make a positive change in your life, then going back to school is something you should definitely look into.
